Critical Self-Reflection of Comments

What I did…

The process in which I used to carefully critically comment on other people’s project pitches was simple yet effective. I first watched the pitch video and noted down all key discussion points, I then did the same thing with the contextual blog. I combined my notes from each and then fit them into the structure which I decided to use for my comments. This was first to comment on the topic and what I like about it, an improvement, a comment on either the chosen medium and/or audience.

Blog Comment 1 – Minecraft VS Fortnite ~ A Teenage Addiction

“I love this as an idea for a project, I think that studying the mental issues which rise as a result of video games is important, and seeing as though this is the integral part of your project I am excited to see your findings. This is especially true in regards to the examples that your using – With Minecraft on its biggest rise since creation and Fortnite’s consistent popularity over the past year i think that your project is incredibly timely. I think the target audience (parents) and target focus group (teenagers) is also great, as these are the two main groups involved concerning this particular topic.

A main addiction/change I would consider making is looking into some other sources which contradict the idea you’re trying to get across. I believe by taking a bipartisan approach your understanding for the topic will be much better, and perhaps you will make some findings that you were unaware of. I would I also check that the sources you decide to use are academic, credible sources.

I think that by stepping out of your comfort zone by creating in a medium you haven’t used before is also awesome. By using video essays you will be able tot successfully capture the main concepts of your research.

Love your project!”

What

This DA aimed to explore the addiction that specifically teenagers have to gaming (specifically two very relevant games at the moment; Minecraft and Fortnite). The goal of the DA is to gain insight into the qualities that make these games highly addictive and to educate parents.

What I learnt and my contribution

I learnt that there is a lot of debate surrounding this topic and that there are a lot of articles which both support and discourage this notion.  The way in which I believe I would have improved the project was by using what I learnt. That is I would explore both sides of the argument. I would do this by using exclusively academic research in order to ensure the end findings are factual. However, I think that if the goal is to educate parents it is essential to gain a bipartisan view on the subject and then lear all the facts from both sides.

What I got out of the experience

What I think this DA will do really well is engage with its intended audience. The pitch outlines that research and findings will come from “outside the BCM cohort” from parents forums etc. I think that if I incorporate something into my DA it would be a great improvement.

Blog Comment 2 – WHAT GAME MAKERS CAN LEARN FROM PLAYING GOOD GAMES

“I think this is a great idea for a project! I think that learning via playing and experiencing is awesome, with your analysis on Skyrim you will be able to narrow down some key components of a long standing, fun, successful game! While Using Skyrim (a game which you seem to know and love) I think is a great idea as a focus, i think incorporating other successful games with a similar nature could be a good idea. Or perhaps a similar game which has not been so successful, to see what the core differences are.

I also love the idea of “fun is relative”, and I think that referring back to this when carrying out your analysis will be integral in ensuring that gamers/viewers can make their own decision on if the particular item you are talking about does in fact make it fun.

I’m slightly confused about your medium, if you will be creating podcasts or blog posts or both… However if I think that podcasts is the way to go. I think this will help ensure you stick to what you set out to create.

Love your project!”

What

This DA essentially aims to discover what makes a good game. The method which he plans to use is awesome – that is  via playing and experiencing the game. Particularly the game skyrim.

What I learnt and my contribution

The main contribution that I made was to elabrate on the number of games which would be analysed. I think that the chosen game (Skyrim) is a great idea as a focus, but I also think that by incorporating other successful games with a similar nature could be a good idea. Or perhaps a similar game which has not been so successful, to see what the core differences are.

What I got out of the experience

By playing Skyrim I think the creator will be able to narrow down some key components of a long standing, fun, successful game. I think this is the most integral part of his project. This makes me wonder if I should take a similar approach and also play some games myself. However, i don’t want to over complicate my project.

Blog Comment 3 – How Are YOUriding Your Bodyboard?

“I think the most integral part of your project is the comparative analysis you plan to carry out between the health benefits of Surfing vs the Health issues of playing video games. Perhaps a good further step would be to think of a way that the game developers could go about encouraging real surfing via their platform. Maybe the developers could entice surfing brands into sponsorship if they advertised their sport.

I also like the idea of comparing surfers and non-surfers ability at the game as a way of determining how well the game interoperates real surfing.

I think the choice of medium (video essay) is a great choice as you will be able to visually capture how well the graphics of the game reflect real waves, beaches, surfers etc. However a further explanation of how you will structure the video essay series maybe would’ve been a good idea so you have a clear idea of `what you need to be create.

Love your project!”

What

This project compares real world surfing and the surfing game ‘Youriding’ using a number of core elements. The main one being the health benefits of Surfing vs the Health issues of playing video games.

What I learnt and my contribution

The main contribution which I made was the suggestion of a good further step would be to think of a way that the game developers could go about encouraging real surfing via their platform. Maybe the developers could entice surfing brands into sponsorship if they advertised their sport.

What I got out of the experience

I think that the part I like most about this project is the analysis of real life vs games. In my project I take a similar approach. Real guns vs gaming guns. I think the creator drilling down on the differences between the two is something which I could also do. If I was to outline what exactly sets them apart and why they are different it could be key in understanding my own topic better.
